Precious One Giveaway for Wesley…

Have you heard of the Starfish Story?

i first heard about it not long after i joined Reece’s Rainbow as a Prayer Warrior. i did a little bit of research and found that lots of charities use this story to illustrate what a difference one person can make to one other person in this world.

The Starfish story is an adaption of The Star Thrower, according to Wikipedia; it is part of a 16-page essay of the same name by Loren Eiseley (1907–1977), published in 1969 in The Unexpected Universe. The Star Thrower is also the title of a 1978 anthology of Eiseley’s works (including the essay), which he completed shortly before his death. i hope to be able to find a copy of the original story.

So through the years there have been some variations of this story but all involving a young person, an older person and of course the starfishes. Here is my favourite to date (used by the Starfish Charity in 2003):

An old man had a habit of early morning walks on the beach. One day, after a storm, he saw a human figure in the distance moving like a dancer. As he came closer he saw that it was a young woman and she was not dancing but was reaching down to the sand, picking up a starfish and very gently throwing them into the ocean.
“Young lady,” he asked, “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
“The sun is up, and the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them in they will die.”
“But young lady, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference.”
The young woman listened politely, paused and then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves,
saying, “It made a difference for that one.”
The old man looked at the young woman inquisitively and thought about what she had done. Inspired, he joined her in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved

This story has also become Reece’s Rainbow’s rallying cry; to cry out for orphans with special needs: “It makes a difference to this one.”

i am here today to ask you join me and make a difference to one; this one is named Wesley on Reece’s Rainbow and i pray and advocate for him, hoping and praying that it will make a difference in his life.

i am hosting a fundraiser for Wesley, called Precious One Giveaway for Wesley.

12-year-old Wesley needs a family to help him live life to the fullest.

Because Wesley is precious; he was lovingly and fearfully created by God and he deserves so much more than a life in an orphanage, he needs so much more support and encouragement and he should not be casted aside just because of his special needs. He has albinism and as a result has vision problems. But these are all manageable. What is more hurting is the way people might treat him just because his skin colour is different, just because he can’t see well. His own biological family has already signalled to him that they can not take care of him. He needs a forever family who will see him for the wonderful gentle boy that he is and for the amazing young man he could grow up to be, if only given a chance to, if only supported by loving parents. There could be a chance for him, outside of his home country to have these opportunities.

However, international adoptions are very very expensive and a lack of funds is a lousy reason to be without a family. So i want to do as much as i can to make that less of an obstacle and this Giveaway will hopefully, prayerfully do just that.

  1. Nice giveaway! I donated 20, but don’t enter me in the drawing. Give the prizes to others (overseas shipping is expensive, and I’d rather you put that money to Wesley than shipping).
