Book Review: One Day by David Nicholls…

i have been thinking how i should write this review. i have some strong feelings while i read this book and i think i might have to reveal a spoiler in order to show you why i had those strong feelings – so here is the official warning: Spoiler Alert!!!

bookreview_oneday20150521i love the concept this book is based on. We get a look at one specific day of the year in the lives of Emma and Dexter, over a span of almost 20 years. And this is how we follow their friendship, the ups and downs of their lives and their relationship with each other. It fascinated me. And that is why i picked up the book.

So the story has us following Emma and Dexter on the day they met, the day they officially graduated from university and are ready, or more like totally unprepared, to face the ‘real’ world. From the very beginning, we sense that they are meant to be. But their own hang-ups are preventing them from getting together.

Each year, we see them on that exact date and we get a glimpse at what they are doing and have been doing, and more importantly how their relationship has progressed or not at all in some years. They both come from very different worlds and it is interesting to see how they view each other’s lives and careers or lack thereof. i was sad to see their falling out and how it affect each of them.

There is a lot of internal monologue as the Nicholls shows us their true thoughts about their situation and their intentions. And about three-quarters through the book, the writer in me kicked in and shouted, “Too much telling, not enough showing!” (see here for explanation about what that means).

Anyhow, my brain said that because these 2 characters have been dancing around each other for years and they still are NOT together! Come on!

SPOILER!

And then they did get together! Hurray!

All was good and right in the world now. Of course, they had the usual couples disagreements and tensions. But they worked through them.

SPOILER!

Then she dies! In a most unfortunate accident! On her way to meet him to view what was possibly their new home!

OMG!

How could Nicholls do that? After taking me on such an emotional ride, i thought finally there will be a happy end for these two… sigh!

Of course, i know in real life there are seldom happily ever after. But this is fiction and i am along for the ride, plus real life is difficult as it is, sometimes one hopes for a little escape with the characters of a story such as this one.

After all that, i still do like the story and the premise of the book. The writing is good and i like the way he tells the events of a whole year in a day. It makes for a good summer read.

Have you read this book? Or maybe you have read other books by Nicholls? If yes, would you recommend his other books?

Book Review: The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult…

i finished reading this book some months ago but have been thinking about whether i do indeed truly like the story or not. And what i should include in the review. thetenthcircle_20150510

Let me tell you a bit about the characters involved first. There is Daniel, the seemingly flawless work-from-home-husband, supportive of his wife, Laura´s interesting career, as a psychology professor, and a wonderful father to their teenage daughter, Trixie, who seems to have the perfect boyfriend, Jason, and a great social life at school.

Daniel is a comic artist and through out the book we get to see the story he is working on for the well-known comic publisher (you will have to read to find out which one), inserted between chapters. He is the world´s most patient man and never seems to lose his temper. However, his past hides a deep sad secret, one not even his wife knows about. Laura loves her job and family but is hiding her own secret, one which threatens to destroy her family and her current life.

All these comes to a head when Trixie comes home from her best friend´s house in tears and Daniel finds her in the bathroom, where she confesses to being raped by her “perfect” boyfriend. He said she came onto him, she said she said no.

As the investigations progress, Laura´s affair comes to light. She says she ended it. Daniel is torn. But they have to keep it together to help Trixie through this terrible experience.

Trixie suffers at school, many not believing her, accusing her of wanting to destroy her boyfriend´s football career, because he broke up with her. Even her best friend takes the other side. She hides at home.

Then they receive the news that Jason took his own life. But the nightmare does not end. Evidence soon shows that Trixie might the one who pushed Jason off the bridge. She runs and Daniel does what any good father would do, he covers for her and then goes after her. Through this journey to find their daughter, Laura learns about a past she never knew about her husband.

At the beginning of this review, i said i was deciding whether or not i really liked this story. It is a good story but i am not sure because there is so much packed into it and i feel a bit let down that not all the themes are thoroughly explored. But of course, i understand there is only so much a writer can say in one book.

i did finish the book, still wanting to know what happened to this family and how they are coping with the consequences of their actions. But even with some unanswered questions,  i did enjoy the book and yes i would recommend that you give it a read. It is a typical Jodi Picoult book with the many heart-wrenching decisions her characters have to make to finish their journey.  It made me think, would i have done the same thing if i were in their position? Would i be able to bear the consequences and still live on? If you have read this book, let me know what you thought about it. Or about any other Jodi Picoult book.  You can read my review of another Picoult book here.

Book Review: The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared… Jonas Jonasson…

i have been meaning to write this book review for a long time. A dear friend recommended i read this and it is a wonderful book!

100yearoldman_20150329i love the easy-to-read writing. i love the highly-improbable-yet-still-believable storyline. i love the amazingly quirky yet lovable main character, Allan Karlsson, who lived the most luck-filled and eventful life.  His companions on his journeys are equally strange and wonderful to get to know.

Every decision which Allan made, took him on an adventure, every adventure led him to incredible meetings with historical figures and enabled him to influence the route history took.

And all Allan ever wanted was a peaceful life. Instead he became involved in the making of the atomic bomb, he saved Churchill from an untimely death, he owed his life of luxury in Bali to Mao and much more.

This book is the relaxing read with a bit of history thrown in and a side of good humour to make it all go down as smooth as Allan´s favourite drink – vodka.

i will leave you to discover the rest of the book for yourselves… don´t want to ruin your fun 😉 i look forward to reading Jonasson´s other books 😀
