Passabene…

Pass…what??, you ask.

Passabene – a self-check system which Coop, one of the major supermarkets, in Switzerland have installed in their larger stores. This system is not new. i believe it was started maybe 4 years ago. But i never got to use the system until a few months ago when we went to a bigger Coop a couple of villages down from us (the ones in our little village and in the old town are too small for such a system).

So why do i want to talk about a system which has been in use for 4 years already? Well, last week i talked about how much trust exists between service provider/stores and customers in this post. i just wanted to show another example of it here.

Picture from a Japanese Website – http://bxp.seesaa.net/article/126977284.html

In brief, this is how the Passabene system works. (You can visit the website here – in German)

You register with your Coop Supercard (ok, you have to have a Coop Supercard first – which is easy to get, just fill in the form and they mail you the card on which you can collect points) to be a user of Passabene. It was a little confusing for me as the lady at the counter had initially misunderstood what i wanted (i blame my poor Swiss German). Anyhow, confusion cleared. The process to register was simple, again just fill in a form with name, address and Coop card number, she keys it into the computer and you can instantly use Passabene.

You swipe your Coop card at the computer screen, next to the rows of scanning devices. One of the devices light up – that one is yours. You take it and off you go shopping. Simply scan your items and put them in your trolley.

At checkout, go to the specially marked Passabene line, which usually has almost no one, give the lady behind the counter your scanner and she loads it up to her screen, you pay and done. It’s quick and easy, saves time; you can be in and out in minutes if you only needed a few things.

She didn’t even ask to see what items i had in my trolley. They trust that everything you put in there has been scanned. It would have been so easy to slip an extra apple or two in there. (Of course i didn’t)

The other thing i love about it is, my son will stay by my side and even help to get things from the shelves so he can do all the scanning. Normally he asks to go and play at the toy section till i finish, which isn’t a bad arrangement, but i just like to have him go supermarket shopping with me. i think it is because i grew up doing just that. My family loves supermarket shopping, especially my dad who insists on walking up and down every aisle even though we only need 2 things (we never leave with just 2 things!). So it’s a family event which i love from my childhood (actually we still do that now when i go back to visit). It’s a tradition i want to pass on. 😉 Plus, i think that it is good opportunity to talk about the food he eats.

i found some interesting discussion on the English Forum. There are a couple of people who don’t like the system and also one who had been constantly spot-checked on. Have a read here if you like to listen to what others have to say about Passabene.

Happy Shopping – wherever you may be shopping.

Fixed! And Discovery…

Hurray! My brilliant hubby fixed the computer! He came home on Saturday morning and looked into it that afternoon. He went out to get a SATA cable/drive the same afternoon and proceeded to download all my files, which was my major concern, and kept them safe. After which, he spent most of his free time over Sunday and Monday restoring the Operating System. Success by Monday evening! Then some testing and we were back online!! Thank God for a “geeky” husband 😉

So while the husband was busy trying to pump new life into old computer, i was on my little netbook (which is normally used only for writing), trying to get it to work like a big laptop, in order to carry on doing everything i want to on a computer. With that in mind, i searched the internet for a replacement to Photoshop (my version of Photoshop is sooooo very old) so i can continue sharing pictures here. (Yes i know i can just upload the raw pictures but i just like to tweet my photos and have a little control over them)

Now i offer to you my very short first ever tech review of software (and likely my last?):

Photoscape and Paint.NET

i like Photoscape for it’s easy to use interface and the quick way you can make changes such as applying sepia tones to a photo and put it into a special frame (i did not manage to create my own frame, i used one of the pre-sets). However, it does not support layers and is mainly a program to simply and quickly enhance your photos. And for this purpose, it is a great program! Below is an example of what you can do in a few short minutes:

Sepia tones, frame and text added in just a matter of minutes.

For me, Paint.NET comes closer to Photoshop. It supports layers and has similar tools and icons. The extend of manipulation is far greater than Photoscape and with the exceptions of a few functions, such as the variety of saved file format available, i’m very happy with it. The one thing i did not like was that text immediately becomes pixels and thus can not be changed after you click enter. It can be worked around if you do a little extra planning. Here is what i managed to do about 10mins into using the program:

Custom frame, text and slight image manipulation done using layers.

The best part is both programs are free to download!

Here’s a review of Photoscape and Paint.NET by Cnet. Have a read. Maybe give it a try. Let me know what you think 😉

No, Not Again…

Summer is really not a good time for our computers – sigh! This morning i turned on the computer and was met with a grey screen – that’s right – grey, not blue (which i think is worse). So what does grey mean?

Grey means that it was able to run on limited capacity but can not actually start the proper Windows platform – sigh!

It ran the Auto Repair program a few times – nothing. It found that 2 “boot critical” files were corrupted. So i clicked on Advance Options, hoping for another solution. Because i simply can not believe that my laptop which was functioning perfectly, showed no signs of any problems just 8 hours before is now unable to start!

Anyhow, i didn’t give up (at that time). i tried to do a System Restore to an earlier date, thinking maybe an update is causing the problems. It said System Restore successful but upon restarting, we were back at grey again! This happened both times i tried restoring to different dates.

i’m composing this on my little Dell netbook, which has no picture editor, which i use mainly to write so i have very limited programs on it (to avoid distractions). So this post will have no picture.

This also once again means i have lost files! AHGRGRRR… (see here for other losses.) i did the last backup 2 months ago – so at least it’s only 2 months worth of files. But i was in the process of painstakingly downloading from our LJ picture gallery (see the above link for details about that story) over 500 photos. Now i will have to restart the process – sigh! What time will be wasted re-downloading those 100 over photos i had already done. SIGH!

Oh well, the laptop was getting old (i think almost 4 or 5 years old).  Maybe, just maybe (fingers, toes and eyes all crossed) we could get it to work again? At least long enough to retrieve those files. sigh… 😦
