This post is actually 10 days after Husband’s birthday but the week has been crazy busy and we did celebrate it late (he was away for work).
So 2 days after his actually birthday, i cooked a seafood dinner (well, sort of, we had 2 seafood dishes and a veggie dish) in celebration. In the late afternoon, Tobias helped to prepare the cake or more like cakes. i decided that since it was just us i will not make a whole cake; it would take us forever to finish it. And there was a recipe i wanted to try: Chocolate Lava Cake… an absolutely calorie-filled yummy cake! Or more like mini cakes.
It was a small simple celebration at home but we enjoyed it, and the cakes too. Although it was a little too bitter for Tobias’ taste; it was made with dark chocolate.
Oh and that very long present you see in the picture above, that is a Scratch Map; where the countries are all covered with a golden foil and you can scratch off the places you have been too. So appropriate for constantly travelling Husband/Daddy, don’t you think? You can read more about it here.
In case you are interested, the recipe is from Chef John at FoodWishes ; he has some great recipes and i love his videos!
And here, as Chef John said in his video, is the money-shot:
Hmmm… hungry just looking at it…
PS: even though it was 4 mini cakes, we didn’t finish that last one, even after a week, cos it was just so rich! But oooh… so yummy… 😛
Today, 8 years ago, this little guy entered our lives and life has never been the same again; it has never been better. Now don’t get me wrong, life hasn’t been a bed of roses; parenting is never a bed of roses but it is one of the most rewarding jobs ever… you just have to wait a fair while for the rewards to show up… hehheee 😉
So on Wednesday, 16th May 2012, he had a party with his friends at the Coop Restaurant in the neighbouring village. (For my not-in-Switzerland friends, Coop is one of the 2 big supermarket chains here.) Now the party costs actually included a cake – but it was a simple chocolate or fruit cake. Tobias wanted me to make the cake and this year he was happy with whatever i wanted to make. (Previous years requests can be seen here, here , here and here.)
i made Cake-in-a-cone, something i have always wanted to try. These pictures show the progress after my experiments were done.
The party started with the children (we invited 9 kids but 1 didn’t show) having to decorate their animal masks.
Then a shooting game – guess what they are shooting… the “wild animals”… just kidding… 😉
Next was Spin-the-bottle with a twist; when the bottle points at you, you go get your gift for the birthday boy 🙂 i like.
After which, they got to decorate their very own little piece of carrot cake with icing and flowers and pigs and smarties. The kids went a little crazy as you can see below (and after i shot these pictures, the boys just drowned their cakes in icing!).
Finally it was time for the birthday song and birthday cake. My favourite shot.
No, actually here is my favourite shot, taken today at home (a custom i started last year: to take a photo of the 3 of us, on the actual day of his birthday, at our dining table with a small cake).
8 years have just flown by… i have watched him grow and learn and change, watched him take falls and pick himself up again, watched him progress through school, watched him make good friends and so much more… i wonder what the coming year for Tobias will hold…
The first year we were here (before kid), i had gather some church friends and done a fairly big do… after kid, we toned it down and saved the big do for the son. So these days it is normally a quiet celebration at home, where i cook (or i try to) one or two of his favourite dishes and bake a cake and we sing happy birthday – just the 3 of us 🙂
This year, i decided to do a mostly meat meal (he likes his meat) and Tobias decided that we should do cupcakes this year instead of a regular cake. The cupcakes were decorated with mini Smarties to spell… …have a look. Can you make out what they spell?
Well, if you said, Happy Birthday Daddy, you would be right. If not, go get your eyes checked! i can recommend a great optician. hehhehehhee… kidding…
Tobias also made a card, or should i say a Giant Card, which is really a big sheet of paper with drawings of his and the words, “Happy Birthday Daddy. Love Tobias. I love you.”.
Daddy also got a funky cool watch as a present.
(i forgot to take a photo of it so here’s a link to an online shop which sells it.)
Happy Birthday My Dear! Life would definitely be less interesting without you in it. Thank you for choosing to spend the rest of your birthdays with me and son. Luv ya lots.
