Looking for Winter…

It has been a non-winter this season (reason? in my opinion, it’s climate change – it can not be denied) so, during the winter-sport holidays, we went looking for some snow. And we did find some, but high up in the mountains. The road leading up is usually paved in snow but not this time (actually, it wasn’t last year either). Still we managed to enjoy a snow day out.

Here’s a few photos for you to enjoy:

All is not lost – winter has made an appearance in the last 2 days – late but at least it felt a little more like winter. But it was really just for all of 2 days, we are back to sort of spring type weather now.

What does this mean for spring and summer? i am not sure. i do hope we will have a decent summer because i am a sunshine person. Are you a sun-seeker or does the cold suit you better?

Book Review: Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

This is one of those unusual situations for me – i watched the movie before i read the book. This time around i didn’t read the book first because i heard about the movie before the book and there was such hype about it, we just decided to watch it.

It was a good movie, which showcased some parts of Singapore but we felt that it showed little of what Singapore is really like or how the average Singaporean lives. But of course, the story had little to do with the average Singaporean.

41rujicffol._sx327_bo1204203200_i thought i would read the book to see if there was more to it. While there was not much about normal Singaporean life, it did have more.

It contained, as expected of a book, so many more layers and sub-plots than a movie can present. i also felt that the movie presented a few of the characters in quite a different light than the book did. But again, this was not out of the ordinary for a movie adaption.

i, of course, liked the book better! No surprise there. The book followed not just the story of Nicholas and Rachel but also of Nicholas’ cousin, Astrid. Kwan keeps us on the edge by moving between the storylines, yet maintaining a strong link between the various plots and really showing off how complex family relations can get in a large, wealthy Asian family. It was great to have the family tree at the beginning of the book to guide us through the complicated who’s related to who bits.

i love how the various cousins and aunts are all trying to get a piece of the action by being their super KP (kaypoh = colloquial for busybody) selves and stepping over what most would consider normal family actions/reactions. In this aspect, i feel Kwan has done a good job.

i also enjoyed the ending which doesn’t quite tie all things up in a nice bow, we leave the story sort of in the middle of the action and this gives the reader room to imagine what might happen after. It gives a nice sense that their stories are not at an end, that there is more to come.

If you want to learn some Singaporean slang, dive into the completely upside-down world of the super-rich and a good Romeo/Juliet-type story, then this is the read for you.

Happy Reading!

Starting the Year with Thanks…

Thank You!

Thank You God, for being the wonderful God that You are, for being the healer-God, for being the God who reassures, for being the God who loves us so much.

i want to not only thank God but i also want to express my most heartfelt thanks to all my family and friends who have been with us over the last few months. You all cared, you all prayed, you all showed your love and made such efforts to reach out and help.

THANK YOU!

Some of you might not know – my father had been in the hospital since mid-September last year and finally, after more than 4 months of various complications, he is home now! Praise the Lord!

It has been most amazing to watch how my family (aunts, uncles, cousins), my friends (you know who you are) and my churches (both in SG and CH) gathered forces and surrounded us with love and prayers as we navigated this difficult time with so many ups and downs.

It was very difficult for me to not be there for my dad and my mum, and my brother. But God is good! He provided for others to care for my parents and brother. It truly showed me the love of God which flows through His people.

i did get to go visit a couple of weeks ago. It was good to have been there to get more details from the doctors as well as be there for the sudden down and up again of my dad’s condition. i was so glad that the day i had to leave he was well enough to sit up without the oxygen. And of course, now he’s home and able to celebrate the Chinese New Year at home.

Once again, Thank You!

i leave you with this lovely image that greeted me as i flew from Singapore back to Switzerland. The Lord is the one who makes the sun rise every morning and He is the one who holds my future, our future. And i know that the future is secure in His Hands.
